Operation T’ing Off is our annual golf event. We will have anywhere from 100-120 in attendance. That includes veterans and volunteers. Veterans generally range from the Korean War all the way through the war in Afghanistan and Iraq. So amazing. It is a time of faith and fellowship. All the while chasing a little white ball around the course. It’s really an awesome combination for fulfilling our mission. One of our volunteers summed it up with this, “Sometimes it’s not about playing golf.” Oh how right he is. We will get back to that in a minute. At one of these events, Robin Sigars gave the message before presenting the awards. He talked about the hope that comes from Jesus. His message had a personal story in it. Talking about how he and his wife have faced cancer. And were getting ready to face it again. Going to face it, knowing no matter what the outcome, they have hope. And with that hope, they have a purpose. And it was spot on.

At another one of these events, Robin told a story about greyhounds at a dog track. If any one of you have ever been to a dog race, you have seen this. Basically, there’s an electronic rabbit on a rail. It’s released from a starting box and the dogs pursue it. The chase is on. The rabbit goes all the way around the track with the dogs on its tail. Obviously, the first dog to cross the finish line wins. That is their purpose. To chase the rabbit. To win the race. At one particular race, the rabbit for some reason exploded. Parts of it went everywhere. None of the dogs were hurt, but they didn’t know what to do. Some of them started playing with the parts. Others simply laid down. And still others just sat and barked at the crowd. They were confused. They didn’t know what to do, because their purpose was now gone. Ever feel that way? Ever feel like you don’t have a purpose? I’ve been there.

Charlie 22 Outdoors was founded years ago with this mission in mind: To show a hope, a love, and a personal meaning that comes from God‘s grace. The latter part of our mission can be summed up with one word. Purpose. Having a personal meaning in God‘s grace…is having a purpose in God‘s grace. We believe that everyone needs a purpose. When we wake up each morning, we need a purpose. That helps us keep going. It gives us something to look forward to. And if we are pursuing the purpose that God has for us, then we are pleasing God. We are following his command for us. No matter how big or small it may seem, God‘s purpose for us is all part of his plan for us. And that is powerful. So today, let’s work on fulfilling our purpose for God. No matter how big or small we view it. If you don’t know what that is, make today the day you begin praying for guidance in that. He will show you. Let’s remember what we are called to do. Seek him. Love him. Follow him. If we do this, we will be serving him. And that is our purpose.

Yesterday‘s devotion was about going through hardships and being attacked. The challenge that it is to get through moments like that. It truly blows me away how God uses those moments to build us. A week or so ago, we talked about a video that was sent to me by one of our veterans. The narrator in the video was talking about praying to God for strength. And God answered his prayers by sending him difficulties to make him stronger. So true! I want to add to this. I want to add another way that God does things to help us get through tough times. Help us get through difficulties. To keep us moving forward.

Months ago, I was wrapping up work one day at the office and I got a phone call from an unknown number. I didn’t answer it. As I don’t answer most phone calls that I don’t know who the number belongs to. The caller left a voicemail saying that he didn’t want to leave me his name, but that he was somebody from my past. And that definitely caught my attention. So I called him. Ended up that he was a former student of mine. A kid that could’ve been a good basketball player. But, he chose to not stay in school. And quit before he graduated. I remember him. And I thought it was so unfortunate for him to do that. I never wanted to see any of my students quit school. But now let’s just say at this point, his phone call humbled me. It was pretty amazing.

Parker was calling me to tell me thank you for pouring into him years ago. To tell me thank you for caring more about him more than he did for himself at that time. And he wanted to apologize to me for his decisions. Holy cow! Talk about humbling. That was decades ago. He quit school in 1998. And he still wanted to let me know this many years later that he appreciated me. I like to call moments like these “God Winks“. They are moments like these “But God Moments” that can help you move forward. And that’s exactly what his call did. I don’t do what I do to receive phone calls like this. I don’t do what I do to get recognition for anything. I don’t do what I do to have somebody reach out to me. I’m simply trying to serve God. I say all that to say this, and I told Parker this as well, calls like this are God’s way of saying stay the course. It’s God‘s way of letting us know he’s there. Parker was God’s tool for helping me stay focused. And that is awesome my friends. So today, stay the course. Keep moving forward. Stay focused knowing that God has you. God has us all. He always has. He always will.

It never fails that when we are preparing for events, the attacks come. Sometimes they blindside us. Other times we see them coming. They come in the forms of personal attacks. They come in the forms of attacks on others we care about. Can be as simple as dropping something that breaks that’s important. Can be as big as hearing that one of your dear friends was just diagnosed with brain cancer. Attacks also come as disagreements. Confusion. Misunderstandings. Sometimes a variety of things come at the same time. And we believe it is because Satan is trying to keep us from doing our work. He knows good things are getting ready to take place. He uses whatever he can to keep us from being successful.

Ever have one of those days where you feel like a punching bag? Where you feel like everything coming at you is continually to trying to beat you up? Ever have one of those weeks? One of those months? What about one of those years? I bet we all have felt like that at times. I know I do. No matter what I do, during those moments it seems like nothing I come up with is enough to battle it back. Nothing! There have been many times I have felt helpless. Especially, times where my family was being attacked. And I couldn’t do anything about it. That is a bad feeling. A terrible feeling. Feeling helpless is terrible. Not many things are worse than watching your loved ones go through something like this. But, as bad as those moments are, I’m reassured in this one promise: God will not allow our challenges to defeat us. If we have our hope in him, we will get through anything we face. 

If there’s one weapon in our arsenal against times like this, it is trusting God. Trusting him makes us stronger. Trusting him shows that we have our faith put in him. Trusting him gives us hope that only comes from him. Whenever you feel captive to what you’re facing, trust God. In the Bible, we read about times others faced things like this. An example is Job. Then think about Esther. Moses. Peter. David. Etc. And the ultimate example for us is Jesus. Each facing very difficult times. Yet…God was there for them. God protected them. We can learn from this. We can learn that when we are faithful to God, he is faithful to us. He will take on the battles that we face. He will take on the attacks. And know this reassurance, God will win. He already has. The victory was declared on that cross. So today, turn to him no matter what attacks you face. Knowing he will get you through.

Years ago, I loved to read. As a kid for sure. I remember, while living in Germany, I read Stuart Little and Charlotte‘s Web multiple times each year. And of course, I enjoyed comic books. Which kid didn’t? My mother bought me some of the classics as well. Shorter versions of them. But still, they were the classics. Moby Dick for example. Somewhere along the line, I lost my interest in reading novels. Anything fiction. I just couldn’t stay focused as I read those. I just lost interest. Now…when it comes to historical books, count me in. I really enjoyed those Time Life Magazine books. The ones that came in a series of 20. Where each book was on a different topic. For instance, the World War II series had books about separate battles. Or weapons. I can read those for days. 

Chapter books are kind of parallel to our lives. Just as you turn to chapter 1, chapter 2, chapter 3, and so on, our lives have chapters. Each day we are writing the books of our lives. What we do. What we say. Where we go. Who we associate with. Basically, our entire life has different chapters. Past chapters. Present chapters. Future chapters. And I bet each chapter will look different from each of us. I know my chapters do. Just think about this for a second. There are things in my past that certain people know about me. Chapters that I’m not proud of. Do you have any of those? But, those chapters can be important testimonies for those with similar experiences. If they were to read about my life, they might be able to benefit from learning about what I went through. What I did. Where I was. My mistakes can be life lessons for others. And hopefully now, I am living a life that’s an example of how to do things. Or at least, a life where I’m trying to do the right things. 

Another book that I read is the Bible. I try to read it daily. The chapters in it are a manuscript for us to follow. Definitely, life lessons for us to learn from. There are so many people in the Bible that we read about. Where they were at one time. And where they went another. In the Bible, we can see the lessons that Jesus was teaching us back then. Lessons that are lasting today. Lessons that will last in the future. That’s pretty incredible if you think about it. Things that he taught 2000 years ago are still relevant today. Simply amazing. So today, as we continue writing the stories of our lives, let’s try to make each chapter one that others can truly learn from. Let’s try to be examples that people can apply to their lives. Today, let’s continue learning about Jesus and work to be like him. Today, let’s make sure that he is our Lord and Savior. And let’s let him be the author of our lives. Don’t wait till tomorrow. Start today. If you don’t know how, let’s talk.

God‘s timing is always perfect. It never ceases to amaze me. He always seems to send somebody just at that “right” moment. I have had veterans that I’ve been blessed to be able to work with, send me messages of gratitude. Messages like this motivate me. Humble me. Keep me going. One of them I met a few years ago. We developed a bond that was pretty instant. He went into a really dark time. Demons were attacking him. He didn’t even look the same. We surrounded him with love and prayer. He sent me a text that was simply a photograph of him. Smiling. Saying that he loved me. Messages from the other veterans are similar in nature. Their timing couldn’t have been better. God‘s timing couldn’t have been better. Let me explain. 

God puts us into positions where we can best serve him. He puts us into places where our skills and our talents can show others who he is. Whether we are laborers, managers, counselors, owners, or something else. Doesn’t matter. Our talents are to be used to serve him. Sometimes, the roles that we are put in come with attacks. Attacks on what we are doing. And attacks on us personally. The latter has happened to me. Without going into great detail, let’s just say that it hurt me. First it shocked me. Then it hurt me. I will not deny it. And I understand that the role that I’m in comes with attacks like this. But, I feel the hedge of protection around me. Around the ministry. And that hedge went to work during the attacks. 

I know that most of us, if not all of us, realize the importance of surrounding ourselves with people who care about us. People who celebrate our victories. People who will be there for us when we are suffering. And people who are not afraid to hold us accountable. That is part of being part of God’s family. I love the saying: “Surround yourself with people who will brag about you, and fight for you, when you’re not in the room.” There is so much truth and wisdom in this statement. We should love one another enough to do all of these for each other. If you’re reading this today, know that I view you as part of our family. And know that I value your accountability of my actions. Scripture warns us about succumbing to temptation. Temptation can include retaliation. That would’ve been easy to do. Scripture also tells us to help others the best that we can. To carry their burdens. To bless them just as God will bless us. And that is what happened from the messages that I received.

I’m aware that I talk about Coach Armstrong a lot when I write these devotions. I do so because we had so many conversations that had life lessons in them. Many times they were very challenging. Just the way he meant them to be. Things that will always stick with me. Things that I hope that my children and grandchildren will learn as well. Obviously, I try to live by the ideals that we talked about. I try to walk daily on those. One thing that really stuck out to me hopefully will resonate with you too. We were talking about how we are called to serve and to tell others about Jesus. And he said something to me along these lines. Can you imagine going to heaven and along the way people that you know are in hell, are saying to you, “Why didn’t you say anything?” Holy cow! 

I heard a message at church one time that really put this into perspective. Here is a quote that was mentioned: “The gospel is not good news if it does not get there in time.” I hope this is hitting home. Because this puts the burden on us. The burden is for us to tell others the good news. To tell others about Jesus. We can ask God to send someone. We can ask him to intervene. And his response can simply be that he sent us. He did send somebody. Us! That means you and me. People that don’t know Jesus, are not going to know Jesus, unless we tell them about Jesus. Read that again. We cannot expect them to find out who he is if we don’t tell them. Think about yourself. How did you find out about Jesus? Did you just bump into him? I think not.

The Bible tells us that there is one way to our Father. And that is through Jesus. There’s no way around that point. The path goes through Jesus. So let’s not assume that people we talk to know him. Let’s not assume that they have heard the gospel. The good word. Instead, let’s assume that they do not know Jesus. Let’s assume that they have not heard the gospel. Let’s assume they have not heard the good word. And let’s be the ones to have the strength to tell them. And let’s view it not as a burden, but as a blessing. A blessing getting to tell others. I know this is easier said than done. I know this is easier to read about than it is to put into action. I get it. I am still working on having the strength. The confidence. So let’s work on this together. And if you don’t know Jesus, let’s talk. Let’s help you develop a relationship with him. Let’s make sure that you hear the good word. And let’s make sure that you’re not one of those people that are asking: “Why didn’t you say anything?”

As I’m writing this, I am wondering about the broken pieces that we have in our lives. The things that caused us harm. Caused us heartache. Maybe some things that you brought on yourself. Maybe some things that someone brought on to you unexpectedly. Or maybe, just maybe, you were the one who caused others to have broken pieces. Maybe you did so without even knowing that you did. Or maybe, you did so knowing what you were doing. No matter what circumstance or situation you fall into, we all have dealt with broken pieces. Either in our lives or in the lives of others that we know.

As we’re thinking about this, let’s also remember that no matter what it is that is broken, God can mend it. No matter what it is that has caused us harm, God can mend it. No matter what it is that has caused us heartache, God can mend it. Broken relationships. Broken spirit. Broken whatever. God can mend all of them. I am a firm believer in this. I have seen it. I have seen it in my life. In the lives of those around me. I have witnessed it firsthand. And I bet many of you have as well. 

One thing that we must keep in mind is that this does not mean that we are going to avoid pain. I’m not talking about physical pain. I am talking about the kind of pain that we feel internally. God mending these for us does not necessarily take away the pain. And I think that is because we can grow stronger through those moments. A veteran that I know sent me a video.  In the video there was a voice that said he prayed for strength. And that God gave him difficulties to make him strong. And I think that’s an example of God mending the situation. Placing in his life a difficulty for him to go through. I’m sure it was very hard for him to go through it. Possibly causing him pain. But what’s awesome is that even though God gave him a difficulty, he never left his side. He was there the entire time, leading him through it. And the end result…the guy came out stronger. So today, be encouraged knowing that God can pull you through any difficult season that you’re going through. But you must seek him and let him take control.

Memorial Day is the last Monday of May. The completion of the 3 day holiday that we celebrate because we are honoring all the incredibly brave men and women members of our armed forces that we have lost. They paid the ultimate price for us. It is a time for us to remember their sacrifices. A time for us to remember what their sacrifices have meant to our entire nation. If we look at this holiday in this manner, then we can assure that they will never be forgotten. And that’s powerful. To never be forgotten is so very powerful. 

When I was coaching basketball, we would give a life lesson at every practice. Sometimes as simple as a small statement like: “Prioritize: God. Family. School. Basketball.” Other times we went a bit deeper. Here’s an example. Every year I’d ask the same question at least once: What will people remember and say about you when you are gone? Man, that’s deep. Especially for a teenage boy. After I asked it, I’d add my thoughts on what I think people might have said about me if I had died as a result of my accident. My thoughts are that they would have said things like…He had potential. He could have been a great leader. He loved the spotlight. Those are each n yeah I saw that here’s that thing never mind ice ways to say I didn’t have my head on straight. My priorities were messed up. And I’m sure there are more things they may have thought. 

So now let’s ask ourselves the same question. Think about what you might be remembered for when your time on earth is up. Each day is one day closer to that time. I know this is a tough and dark topic. But it’s a good point to self analyze. Are you living a life serving others or yourself? Are you living a life of morals or a life of self satisfaction? Are you living a life following Jesus or a life following the world? The last question really is the only one that matters. Because, if we are following Jesus then there really are no other questions to be answered. No questions! So today I’m pleading with you to begin living a life that follows Jesus. Live a life that lets him lead you serving others. Not a life serving yourself. And don’t do it for recognition. Just do it because we’re called to. If we do this, then when our time here is gone, others will remember us in amazing ways. They will talk about us and ensure that we will not be forgotten. And that’s powerful.

Barbara and I are blessed to have five grandchildren. Having grandchildren is hard to beat. It really is. And this past week, we had all of them together at one time. It can be hard for that to happen because everybody is so busy with their daily lives. So we cherish the times we get. Their ages range from the oldest one being about 12 years older than the youngest. And I can tell you this, age doesn’t matter when it comes to joy. Pure joy. And when they experience joy, we experience joy. Not many things better in this world than the laughter of a grandkid. Those of you who are grandparents can relate to this I’m sure. 

Now, let’s think about the joy we experienced when we first came to know Jesus. I bet some of us were moved to tears. Or maybe you laughed in excitement. Think about how your lives changed. I remember sitting in my high school coach’s living room. Sitting there talking about that night in 1990. How that one moment changed my life forever. I’ll never forget it. Coach was always black and white with me. He wasn’t concerned about hurting my feelings. Especially, when the topic at hand was of great importance. My salvation being one of those topics. He straight out asked me if I thought I would have gone to heaven if I died that November night. I told him I wasn’t sure. His response: “Well, if you don’t know, then you probably wouldn’t have.” No more important words have ever been said to me. EVER!!!

I asked Jesus into my life that night. January 4, 1992. I immediately felt it. I knew he was there. His presence was there. Not sure if I can explain the feeling. Joy. Happiness. Relief maybe. Maybe all the above. Honestly, all the above and more is more like it. It was my first time experiencing his grace. His hope. His love. It was then that I knew heaven awaited me. And heaven awaits me now. I have had other experiences where I felt those emotions. When I felt the Holy Spirit really working on me. Working in me. And here’s what is even more cool. Everyone of us can have this. Everyone of us can feel these. EVERYONE OF US. That includes you. So if you don’t already know him, make today the day to come to know him. Welcome him into your heart. If you do know him, maybe you need to try to rekindle the fire. Or maybe try to let the Holy Spirit consume you. Wherever you are in your faith, maybe make today the day.
